About Know the Flow
August 16, 2011 // Comments OffKnowing the flow and explaining it
As professionals in the field of industrial ecology and green business, we are equipped with two decades of experience in material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, resource efficiency and industrial ecology. Who are “we”? We are ifu hamburg and its entourage.
Every day, our work brings questions into focus. Questions, for instance, about finding a balance between making profits and sustaining the planet. That sounds pretty generalized. To make it more precise, we ask ourselves how maximum efficiency in the enterprise and 100% sustainability can be achieved at the same time. While sharing experience with clients and partners is our daily business, we believe that sharing and discussing these questions with the broader public makes sense, too. We believe in creating mutual benefits.
Through this blog, like-minded people can witness the practical challenges of finding solutions to these questions. And through this blog, like-minded people can play a part in developing solutions.
Knowing the flow for a long time: ifu Hamburg
Founded by people with a strong interest in environmental management, ifu hamburg started creating software and addressing sustainability issues beginning in 1992. The office, located in a small urban villa, was so small that people never actually called it an office. It was dubbed The Witch House. There were days when the lack of elbow room so bugged the software development teams (yes, the teams, not the software…) that they’d temporarily seek relief with a road trip. They’d pile their cars full with computers and chocolate bars and head north to the vast plains of Denmark where, for a week or two, a fully equipped vacation house provided room for concentrated development sessions. In those days, we at ifu learned the most important working principle for successful software development: never ever run out of kiddie chocolate. And (on a more professional note) that was the time when we sensed how important the challenge of sustainability in business would become. We realized this a long time before corporate social responsibility came to be on the agenda. That’s why ifu hamburg is not a sales driven, but a topic driven company.
Knowing the flow globally
